Before you apply
Check you can actually leave. Passport or ID. Time off. A budget for the amount plus train or flight. If you might flake, do not take a seat from someone in another city.
After a yes
Buy the ticket. Send the host your arrival window if they asked. Do not redesign the weekend. Do not add a cousin at the station.
On the trip
You are on a guest list that travels. Help with the small logistics they mention. Pay for what the listing said is extra. Leave the house as you found it.
When an outstation listing is live under pop parties or experiences, apply fast — those rooms do not linger.
